MS Noordam

Cruising out of Australia this summer season are two wonderful Holland America ships – MS Noordam and MS Maasdam. Very alike but with subtle differences and either of these ships will give you a wonderful accessible cruising holiday.

The one thing I love about Holland America ships is that basically all features like, restaurants, lounges, bars etc are in the same place on every ship so when you cruise on each ship it is just like being at home – you know where everything is. The other thing I love is that each ship has a particular theme – we last cruised on the Zaandam and her theme was music. The ship was dotted around with musical instruments, signed record covers, music themed art work and in the Atrium which goes through 3 decks is an amazing pipe organ.

MS Maasdam

On MS Maasdam the theme is centred around treasures collected by the merchants of the Dutch East Indies. Reflecting this theme, some of the on board items include a golden gilt bronze figure of a Boddhisattva from China’s Qianlong period (1736-1795), a portrait of a nobleman and charts on the walls depicting maritime navigation of the time.

MS Noordam

On MS Noordam numerous (and notable) artifacts support two main themes shipwide: the Royal House of the Netherlands and the World of Music.

The history of the Dutch monarchy is represented by busts of kings and queens who ruled the Netherlands. Reigning Queen Beatrix appears both in bronze sculpture and in silkscreens by Andy Warhol in the Queen’s Lounge. The atrium displays a noble sculpture of William of Orange, the Dutch prince who is remembered as the “Father of the Fatherland” for leading the Dutch revolt against the Spanish, gaining independence of the region now known as the Netherlands.

In the main lounge, the world of music is symbolized by sculptures of Mozart, a pair of violin chairs and a wall composed of violins. Adorning the Piano Bar are black-and-white photos of blues and jazz icons such as Dizzy Gillespie and B.B. King and the Crow’s Nest on Deck 10 features lively color sketches of various jazz artists.
